Storyline
Six months after the events of Iron Man, Tony Stark is struggling with the public backlash against his weapons manufacturing. He is also dealing with the effects of his palladium poisoning, which is slowly killing him.
Meanwhile, Ivan Vanko, a Russian scientist who was inspired by Stark's father, creates a suit of armor of his own and uses it to seek revenge on Stark. Vanko attacks Stark at the Stark Expo, and Stark is forced to use his own suit of armor to defeat him.
In the aftermath of the attack, Stark realizes that he needs to change his ways. He publicly announces that he is no longer producing weapons, and he creates a new suit of armor that is powered by a new element that he has created.
